It’s a Brand New Day!

In a cool solitude of trees

Where leaves and birds a music spin

Mind that was weary is at ease,

New rhythms in the soul begin.

Changing your daily routine can spark positive, new changes in your life and work. It will take a conscious effort at first, some awkwardness too – getting out of your comfort zone. But if you persist, those awkward changes soon become a new, better habit. Whether you need a break from your hectic lifestyle or looking to become a more aware and awakened person, here are some ideas for kick-starting a fresh, new YOU!

  1. Wake up early. Early mornings are the serenest times to get up and ponder the upcoming day without pressure or distraction. Read, meditate, set daily goals while your mind is uncluttered and the rest of the world still sleeps. By rising early, there’s no stress about being late or having enough time to get ready.

  1. Eat a healthy breakfast. Forego the Danish and cold pizza for steel-cut oatmeal, scrambled eggs and whole grain toast, or a vitamin-rich power smoothie to fuel your morning. You’ll feel more vitalized and less hungry.

  1. Go for a morning walk or run. There’s no better time to take a stroll around the neighborhood than those peaceful morning hours. Temperatures are cooler, and fewer cars to run you over. You’ll get your exercise, check out the neighborhoods, and save money on sweaty gym memberships.

  1. Practice breathing. Breathing is the simplest, most powerful way to control your body. Use the method of square breathing – eight seconds hold, eight seconds exhale, eight seconds hold – to slow your heart rate, calm your nerves and clarify your mind.

  1. Find more things to be thankful for. Seeking and showing gratitude lets us appreciate what we have – health, love, people who care about you, rather than “things” we don’t have. Discover the joy of having small things that don’t go away unless you let them.

  1. Give out compliments. A well-placed, sincere compliment can brighten someone else’s day. People notice and appreciate when you genuinely take an interest. Spread that joy all around. It’s contagious.

  1. Spend time alone to rewind. After a hectic day focusing on other people and activities, it’s important to take time for yourself, to relax, reflect or practice your breathing. Everyone needs a break.

  1. Keep a journal. Writing your thoughts down on paper can be a great form of therapy. It’s helpful to see how much progress you’ve made, and spur on that new YOU.

  1. Unplug when you’re with others. Take a break from your smartphone and social media while you’re with other people. Show them they have your full attention and listening intently. They’ll come to trust you as someone who values their opinions.

  1. Get a full night’s rest. You’ll wake up fully rested and ready to take on the next day’s amazing adventure.
